Why Plassic

The problem

Microplastics are in your blood, your lungs, your food, and your shampoo. The science on this is not contested. What is contested — loudly, expensively — is whether it matters, who is responsible, and what you should actually do about it. Most apps that claim to help either scan barcodes and recite ingredient lists with no context, or they scare you into a subscription and deliver nothing actionable. Neither is good enough. Plassic exists because nobody was being honest — and because the data to do this properly has always existed; it just needed someone to connect it.

The product

One shutter press. A score from 1 to 100. A verdict — Clean, Low, Mediocre, or High — and, if the score is not great, a better alternative from the same category. Plassic does not detect microplastic particles with your camera; it infers exposure risk from a curated, continuously updated database of peer-reviewed research, published ingredient data, and material science. The score is the headline. The alternative is the reward. That is the whole product.

The bigger ambition

The scanner is the foundation. On top of it: a curated marketplace for products that actually score well — not "eco-friendly" by a brand's own definition, but score ≥ 85 by Plassic's published methodology (learn how scoring works on /how-it-works). A B2B trends product for brands that want to understand their own microplastic footprint before regulation forces them to. And an annual State of Microplastics report — peer-reviewed, publicly available, free to cite — that becomes the number journalists and policymakers reach for.

The team

Small now. Growing when it makes sense to. The science advisory is already in place; the product team is three people. If you are a researcher, a data engineer, or a designer who cares about this problem, check back — or email [email protected].

The principles

  • Free forever to scan

You should never have to pay to know what is in the things you eat, wear, or put on your body. Scanning is free. Full stop.

  • No affiliate revenue on recommendations

When Plassic says a product is better, that is based on its score — not a referral fee. The score is the only criteria.

  • Methodology is published

Every scoring decision, every data source, every limitation. It is all on /how-it-works. Read it before you trust the number.

  • Score is governance-locked at marketplace launch

When the curated marketplace launches, the scoring algorithm will be independently reviewed and locked. Nobody at Plassic will be able to move a product's score to benefit a commercial relationship.
